App Store vs web checkout for indie apps

Put your monthly app revenue, average price and international share into the calculator to price Apple's 30% and 15% tiers, Google Play, Stripe and Paddle side by side. These are the questions to settle before you trust the answer.

When does web checkout beat the App Store?

When revenue is high enough to pay for your own tax filing. Apple and Google are the seller of record and file sales tax and VAT for you, folded into their percentage. With web checkout you keep more of every sale but carry a fixed monthly filing cost. At the default inputs ($4.99 average, half international, $100 a month filing) the calculator puts the crossover near two thousand dollars a month against Apple's 15% tier; enter your own numbers to find yours.

What do fixed per-sale fees do to small in-app prices?

Thirty cents a sale is a rounding error on a $60 yearly plan and a third of a 99-cent consumable. If your average sale is under about three dollars, a store's flat percentage can beat Stripe even before filing costs; compare the fixed fee before the percentage.

What does this comparison leave out?

The biggest omission is conversion: fewer buyers will leave an app to pay on a website than tap a one-touch store purchase, and a ten-point drop in conversion can cost more than the commission saved. Also left out are store rules on link-outs and alternative payments in your country and category, refunds and chargeback handling, payout and currency-conversion fees, and your income tax. Ask your accountant about tax and read the current store guidelines before moving any payment flow.
