Questions roasters ask

How do I calculate the cost of a pound of roasted coffee?

Divide the green price per pound by one minus your roast loss, then add labor and energy. At $5.10 per green pound and 15% roast loss, a roasted pound costs $6.00 in green coffee alone, before labor, packaging or fees.

How much weight does coffee lose when roasted?

Most roasts lose roughly 12% to 20% of their weight as moisture and chaff, more for a darker roast. Weigh a few of your own batches in and out and type your real number, because it changes your cost on every pound.

What margin should a coffee roaster aim for?

The tool shows your margin by channel instead of quoting a rule. Retail bags usually leave much more per pound than wholesale, but wholesale fills roasting hours with fewer orders, so it also shows profit per roasted pound and per roasting hour.

How does the blend optimizer work?

List your green coffees with price, cup score and optional limits. It checks every blend in 5% steps and returns the cheapest one whose weighted cup score meets your target, plus the next-best alternatives and the saving against the cheapest single origin that clears the same score.

Does it tell me what my coffee will taste like?

No. Cup score is a number you supply from your own cupping or your importer's sheet, and a weighted average is a planning aid, not a taste prediction. Cup every blend before you sell it.

Is my pricing uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser from what you type, nothing is sent to a server, there are no accounts, and it works offline once the page has loaded.
