← Crypto cost basis calculator
On the 2025 forms, sales of digital assets are reported in their own boxes on Form 8949, separate from stock. Which box a row goes in depends on two facts: how long you held the coins, and whether a broker reported the sale to the IRS on Form 1099-DA, with or without your basis. This page lays out the six boxes and shows how the free calculator assigns each row.
| Held | Box | What the broker reported |
|---|---|---|
| One year or less (short-term) | G | Form 1099-DA, basis reported to the IRS |
| One year or less (short-term) | H | Form 1099-DA, basis not reported |
| One year or less (short-term) | I | No Form 1099-DA |
| More than one year (long-term) | J | Form 1099-DA, basis reported to the IRS |
| More than one year (long-term) | K | Form 1099-DA, basis not reported |
| More than one year (long-term) | L | No Form 1099-DA |
Short-term rows go in Part I and long-term rows in Part II; the totals carry to Schedule D. Check the current instructions for the form year you are filing, because box lettering and 1099-DA phase-in dates are set by the IRS and can differ from year to year.
Add an optional reported column to your sell rows: basis if the exchange reported the sale with basis, nobasis if it reported the sale without basis, and leave it blank if it did not report it. Each row is then sorted into G, H or I when short-term and J, K or L when long-term, a Box column is added to the Form 8949 style CSV it exports, and totals are shown per box. Without the column nothing changes: every row is treated as not reported.
reported | Held one year or less | Held more than one year |
|---|---|---|
basis | G | J |
nobasis | H | K |
| blank | I | L |
It is the information return that brokers file for digital-asset sales, starting with transactions in 2025 for gross proceeds and a later year for cost basis, under the IRS schedule. Whether you receive one depends on the platform you used and the year; confirm the current schedule with the IRS instructions.
Those are the boxes for digital-asset sales that were not reported to you on a Form 1099-DA, short-term and long-term respectively. The calculator puts a row there when its reported column is blank.
No. It produces Form 8949 style rows and totals from your own CSV so you or your preparer can check them against what you file. Nothing is uploaded.
