Enter stalls, occupancy, board, feed, bedding, the time you spend on care and your fixed costs. You get monthly profit, break-even occupancy, the board price that breaks even or reaches your target, and a table by occupancy.

It works from your own figures. It does not know what other barns charge.

Common questions

Is a horse boarding barn profitable?

It depends on whether board covers feed, bedding, labour and the fixed costs of the property with stalls to spare. Many small barns look profitable only because the owner's own care time is counted as free. This calculator prices that time at a wage you choose, so you see what is left.

What occupancy do I need to break even?

Fixed costs divided by what each boarded horse leaves after feed, bedding, labour and unpaid board gives the number of horses you need. Divide by your stalls for break-even occupancy. The page works it out and flags it when you run within ten points of it.

How much should I charge for board?

The page works backwards: the board price at which your barn breaks even, and the price that reaches the monthly profit you want, at your current occupancy. It does not know what other barns near you charge, so compare the result with local rates before changing a price.

Why count my own labour?

Hours you spend feeding, turning out and cleaning stalls are not free. If the barn only works when you are paid nothing, the profit is really a low hourly wage. Set the wage to zero to see the cash view, or to what you would pay a stall hand to see the real one.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent; a test in the code asserts there are no network calls.
