Some vendors bill per GB ingested and charge separately for indexing and retention (Datadog), others sell a flat plan with a pool of included GB (Axiom, Papertrail), and the per-GB rate varies by more than an order of magnitude. At 100 GB a month the cheapest and most expensive list prices in the calculator differ by hundreds of dollars.
GB you do not send. Dropping debug logs in production, sampling noisy health checks, trimming verbose payloads and routing cold logs to cheap archive storage usually cut a logging bill more than switching vendor. Also check retention and search speed: a cheap tool that cannot answer a query during an incident costs more than it saves.
When the 12-month spend under your growth rate differs enough to pay for the migration, which means re-pointing shippers or agents, rebuilding dashboards and alerts and re-learning a query language.
