How much does Mercari take per sale?

Mercari changed its US seller fee structure for listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025. The current schedule is a single 10% selling fee, charged on the item price plus any shipping the buyer paid, with no separate payment processing fee. A listing made before that date keeps the old schedule — 10% on the item price only, plus a payment processing fee of 2.9% of the combined total plus a flat $0.50 — until you edit it.

The current-schedule formula

fee = 10% × (item price + buyer-paid shipping)

payout = item price + buyer-paid shipping − fee − your own shipping-label cost

Mercari also charges the buyer a separate 3.6% Buyer Protection Fee, on top of what they pay — it never reduces the seller's payout, and is not part of this formula at all.

Worked example 1: $50 item, no buyer-paid shipping

LineAmount
Item price$50.00
Selling fee (10% of $50.00)$5.00
Payout$45.00

Worked example 2: the fee reaches shipping too

LineAmount
Item price$20.00
Buyer-paid shipping$6.00
Combined$26.00
Selling fee (10% of $26.00)$2.60
Payout$23.40

Not $2.00 (10% of the $20 item price alone) — the fee is on the combined $26.00. This is the detail sellers most often get wrong on a listing where the buyer pays shipping separately.

The legacy schedule: 10% + 2.9% + $0.50

A listing created before January 6, 2025 that has not since been edited still runs the old schedule: 10% of the item price only, plus a payment processing fee of 2.9% of the combined item-plus-shipping total, plus a flat $0.50 per order. On the same $50 item with no shipping, that is $5.00 selling fee + ($50 × 2.9% + $0.50) = $1.95 processing fee = $6.95 total, for a $43.05 payout — $1.95 less than the current schedule pays on the same sale, because the current schedule dropped the processing fee entirely.

The comparison flips when most of the price is shipping: the legacy schedule only taxes shipping at 2.9%, while the current schedule taxes it at the full 10%, so a listing with a large buyer-paid shipping charge can net more under the old schedule. Use the calculator's "Compare both schedules" button to check a specific sale rather than assuming either direction.

Do this with your own listings

The Mercari fee calculator runs this same arithmetic on your own item price, shipping, and costs, solves for the price you need to hit a target profit, and compares both schedules side by side. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Common questions

How much does Mercari take on a $50 sale?

Under the current schedule (listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025): 10% of $50, which is $5.00, leaving a $45.00 payout, assuming no buyer-paid shipping.

How much does Mercari take when the buyer pays for shipping?

The 10% fee applies to the item price plus the buyer-paid shipping combined. A $20 item with $6 buyer-paid shipping pays 10% of $26, which is $2.60 — not 10% of the $20 item price alone.

What was Mercari's fee before January 6, 2025?

A 10% selling fee on the item price only, plus a separate payment processing fee of 2.9% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, plus a flat $0.50 per order. A listing made before that date keeps this schedule until it is edited.
