Microgreens Tray Planner · GUIDE

How many microgreen trays per week?

Worked on invented numbers; replace them with yours in the planner.

The plan

Four crops, cut on Tuesday and Friday: 20 radish, 10 pea shoots, 15 sunflower and 10 broccoli trays a week. It sells about $881.36 a week, costs $178.55 in seed, media and packaging plus $90.00 fixed, and leaves $612.81, or $47.75 an hour for 12.8 hours of work.

Seeding days follow from harvest days

A 10-day crop cut on Tuesday is seeded on Saturday; cut on Friday it is seeded on Tuesday. Radish at 8 days is seeded on Monday and Thursday. Each crop's trays are split across your harvest days.

The average is 70.7 trays a day, but 83 are on the rack at the peak. With 80 spaces the plan is 3 short on that day.

Rank crops by what a rack space earns

CropMargin per trayMargin per tray per day
Pea shoots$15.91$1.59
Radish$12.19$1.52
Sunflower$12.71$1.41
Broccoli$10.94$1.09

Pea shoots earns the most per rack-day and Broccoli the least, although Broccoli has the highest price per ounce. When the rack is the limit, rank by this column.

A small rack

With 40 rack spaces the best fitting mix on the defaults is 10, 16, 0, 0 trays of radish, pea shoots, sunflower and broccoli, making about $286.47 a week.

Common questions

How long does each microgreen crop stay on the rack?

The days from seeding to cut set how long a tray blocks a space. On the defaults radish takes 8 days, pea shoots 10, sunflower 9 and broccoli 10. A crop that takes a day longer holds every tray a day longer, which is why a slow crop needs more rack than its weekly tray count suggests.

Why does the rack need more spaces than the weekly average?

Because trays are seeded on some days and cut on others. On the defaults the average is 70.7 trays a day, but the busiest weekday holds 83. Plan for the peak, not the average.

Is this advice?

No. It is arithmetic on the numbers you type; check your local rules for selling produce.
