How many people do you need for Secret Santa? Valid draws by group size

Three people is the smallest Secret Santa that works, and it is hardly a surprise: only two draws exist. This page counts every valid draw for small groups so you can see how much mystery a group size actually buys. The counts are recomputed from the generator's own engine by its test suite.

Valid draws by group size

Nobody draws themselves, and there are no couples or last-year rules here. "Swaps allowed" lets two people give to each other, "no swaps" forbids that, and "one big loop" forces a single circle of gifts.

What the table says

At three people, "no swaps" and "one big loop" are the same rule, because the only way nobody swaps is to go round in a circle. From five people up the counts diverge, and the one-big-loop rule always keeps the fewest draws: 24 at five people against 44 with swaps allowed.

The count grows fast. Going from six to eight people takes the swaps-allowed count from 265 to 14,833, so a group of eight has far more room for rules such as couples or last year's pairs before the draw gets predictable.

Adding rules to a small group

Each couple you keep apart shrinks the table. Six people in three couples have 80 valid draws with swaps allowed, 48 with no swaps and 32 as one big loop, compared with 265, 160 and 120 for six people with no couples. If your count falls under about ten, expect people to guess who drew them.

If your group is too small

Add a player who is happy to receive and give a small gift, or drop a rule. The generator tells you which people are stuck when no draw exists, so you do not have to work it out by hand.

Common questions

What is the minimum number of people for Secret Santa?

Three. With three people there are only two valid draws, and both are a single circle of gifts. Four or five people is the practical minimum for a real surprise.

Is Secret Santa fair with a small group?

Each draw is equally likely, so yes, but a small group has few draws and people can often guess. A larger group, or fewer rules, gives more possible draws.

Should I allow swaps in Secret Santa?

Allowing swaps gives the most draws, but two people can end up buying for each other, which some groups dislike. Choose no swaps or one big loop if that bothers you, and add a person if the count gets too small.
