Common questions

How much income tax do I pay in Scotland in 2026/27?

After the £12,570 personal allowance, Scottish income tax is 19% on the next £3,967, 20% up to £29,526 of income, 21% up to £43,662, 42% up to £75,000, 45% up to £125,140 and 48% above. National Insurance is the same as the rest of the UK. On £30,000 you pay about £3,451 income tax, around £35 less than in England.

Do I pay more tax in Scotland than in England?

Below roughly £32,000 to £33,000 of income you pay slightly less in Scotland, because of the 19% starter and 20% basic rates and the 21% intermediate rate. Above that you pay more, because the Scottish higher rate is 42% against 40% and starts earlier relative to income. On £50,000 the difference is about £1,500 a year, and the top rate is 48% against 45%.

What is the marginal rate between £100,000 and £125,140 in Scotland?

The personal allowance is withdrawn at £1 for every £2 over £100,000. With the 45% advanced rate that makes an effective 67.5% income tax rate on that slice, before National Insurance and loans. Pension contributions reduce adjusted net income and can bring it back down.

Who is a Scottish taxpayer?
