Common questions

Can I still claim working from home tax relief?

Not for new years. The flat-rate relief ended on 6 April 2026. But if you were required to work from home in 2022/23 to 2025/26 and never claimed, you can still claim each year until 5 April four years after it ended.

Who qualified for the £6 a week?

Employees whose employer required them to work from home. Choosing to work from home, or being allowed to, did not qualify, and neither did working from home only because the office had no space.

How much is the refund?

The flat rate was £6 a week, £312 for a full year, and relief is your income tax rate on that: about £62 a year at 20% and £125 at 40%. Four years can be around £250 to £500.

How do I claim?

Online with HMRC form P87 when the year's expenses are under £2,500, one claim per tax year, or on your Self Assessment return if you file one.

What if my employer already paid me for working at home?

Tax-free payments from your employer are taken off first. You cannot claim relief on costs your employer already covered.
