Upwork Connects ROI Calculator · guide

What are Upwork Connects worth, and how to tell if a proposal pays

Short answer: Connects are the cheap part of winning freelance work; your time is the expensive part. The calculator prices both for your own numbers.

Everything below is arithmetic on invented numbers. Not financial or business advice. Connects prices, fees and rules are the platform's and change; check your own account. No warranty.

A worked month

You send 40 proposals. Each uses 12 Connects at $0.15 and 15 minutes of writing that you value at $50 an hour. 5 percent of proposals become hires, each a $1,500.00 contract with a 10 percent service fee.

Where the money actually leaks

Halve the Connects per proposal and the month improves by about $36.00. Halve the win rate and it falls by $1,350.00. The levers that matter are win rate and the minutes behind each proposal. Fewer, better-matched proposals usually beat more of them, but only your own history can say which side of that you are on. Try a 1 percent win rate, 30 minutes a proposal and $60 an hour in the calculator: the same Connects spend now loses money.

How to measure your win rate

Common questions

Are Upwork Connects worth the money?

On the default numbers, yes by a wide margin: 40 proposals cost $72.00 in Connects and a 5 percent win rate pays $2,700.00 across two hires. The Connects are the small cost. Your writing time, $500.00 in the same month, is the large one.

What is a good win rate on Upwork?

There is no universal number, and the calculator does not claim one. Count your own hires divided by proposals over several months, then compare it with the break-even rate the tool computes, 1.1 percent on the worked numbers.

How many Connects should one proposal cost?

At a 5 percent win rate, $1,350.00 net per hire and 15 minutes of writing, a proposal stops paying above about 366 Connects. In practice the ceiling matters less than whether an extra boost raises your win rate by more than it costs.
