What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Covers: the AUD 75,000 (AUD 150,000 non-profit) current and projected turnover tests, the taxi and ride-share rule and the 21-day registration window.
- Gives: your 12-month turnover, a projected figure, a deadline and a checklist.
- Not decided: which of your sales count as GST turnover, sales of associated businesses, the date your turnover actually reached the line (a deadline earlier than shown means you should register now), voluntary registration advice, BAS frequency, penalties, and anything that changed after this was written.
Common questions
When do I have to register for GST in Australia?
When your GST turnover is AUD 75,000 or more (AUD 150,000 for non-profit bodies), or you expect it to be over the next 12 months. Taxi, limousine and ride-share drivers must register whatever their turnover.
How is GST turnover counted?
Add your sales for the current month and the previous 11 (the current test), or the current month and the next 11 (the projected test). It leaves out the GST itself, input-taxed sales such as residential rent, and sales of capital assets.
How long do I have to register?
Within 21 days of the day your turnover reached the threshold, or the day you could tell it would. Registering late can mean owing GST you did not charge.
Do I need an ABN first?
Yes. You need an Australian Business Number before you can register for GST.
