Quick Method check (optional)
Once registered, the Quick Method lets you remit a set percentage of tax-included sales instead of tracking input tax credits. It pays off when your costs carry little GST/HST. Rates as understood; confirm on canada.ca.

What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Covers: the CAD 30,000 single-quarter and four-quarter tests, the taxi and ride-share rule, the effective date and the 29-day registration window.
- Also compares: the Quick Method against regular accounting for GST-only, Ontario and 15% HST regions (Nova Scotia 14% not modelled).
- Gives: a quarter-by-quarter table, your effective date and a checklist.
- Not decided: which of your sales count as taxable supplies, sales of associated businesses, the CAD 50,000 charity test, QST, voluntary registration advice, filing frequency, penalties, and anything that changed after this was written.
Common questions
When do I have to register for GST/HST in Canada?
When your worldwide taxable sales are more than CAD 30,000 in a single calendar quarter, or in total over four consecutive calendar quarters. Taxi and ride-share drivers must register from day one.
What happens if I pass 30,000 in one quarter?
You become a registrant on the sale that took you over the line, must charge GST/HST on that sale, and have 29 days to register.
What happens if I pass 30,000 over four quarters?
You stop being a small supplier at the end of the month after the quarter in which the total passed 30,000, and charge tax from the next day.
Does the CAD 30,000 include GST?
The test uses your taxable sales before tax, worldwide, including those of associated businesses. Check the CRA guide for items that are excluded.
