What this does not cover
- Not a rate card. This does not know your market, your niche, or a specific client's budget — it applies the hours and prices you enter to the job as you describe it.
- Does not estimate your writing speed or research time for you. You supply both directly; a first draft of an unfamiliar topic routinely runs slower than a writer's own average.
- No taxes, platform fees, or overhead. If you are also comparing what a job posted through Upwork or Fiverr nets after that platform's cut, see the Upwork vs. Fiverr fee calculator.
- No client negotiation modeling. This does not predict whether a client will accept a higher flat fee instead of a per-word rate — it only compares the two prices you already have.
Common questions
Is a per-word rate or a flat project fee better for a freelance writer?
It depends on the job. A per-word rate only pays for words written -- it does not separately compensate research, interviews, outlining, or revision rounds. A flat fee prices the whole job, including that non-writing time. When a job has heavy research or several revision rounds, a flat fee usually pays a higher effective hourly rate than an equivalent per-word rate; when a job is fast to write with little revision, a good per-word rate can pay more per hour.
What counts as a low per-word rate in 2026?
2026 freelance rate surveys put entry-level content writing at roughly $0.05-$0.10 per word, intermediate-to-senior generalist work at $0.10-$0.50 per word, and specialist work (legal, medical, expert B2B/fintech) at $0.50-$2.00+ per word. A 500-writer survey put the across-the-board average at $0.42/word; a survey of established copywriters put their average at $0.70/word -- the two differ because they sample different populations, not because either is wrong.
Do ghostwriters charge more than bylined writers?
Most freelance writers do not charge extra for ghostwriting (no byline). Of the writers who do add a premium, most add 16-20% over their bylined rate for the same word count, per 2026 rate-guide surveys. This tool shows that range as information only -- it is never added to the numbers automatically.
Why does research and revision time matter to the price?
A per-word rate is calculated only against the words in the final piece. If a job needs four hours of research and two revision rounds before the words are final, that time still has to be paid for somehow -- and a pure per-word rate does not do it. Rate guides describe switching from per-word to flat per-project pricing as the single most reliable way an established writer raises their real income, without ever raising the per-word figure they quote.
Is this a rate card or a guarantee of what to charge?
No. This tool applies the hours and prices you enter to compute an effective hourly rate for the job as you describe it -- it does not know your market, your niche, or your client's budget, and it is not a substitute for your own judgment or a professional rate-card resource.
