What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Covers: new-regime income tax slabs from 0% to 30%, the section 87A rebate with marginal relief, 4% health and education cess, the section 44ADA presumptive scheme compared with actual expenses, the advance tax schedule, and GST registration and surcharge warnings.
- Not decided: the old tax regime and its deductions, TDS already deducted by clients, surcharge amounts, capital gains, interest, dividends, rental income, GST amounts, residency, section 44AD businesses, and exactly how much advance tax you owe. The Income Tax Department or your chartered accountant decides these.
Common questions
How much of my freelance income should I set aside for tax in India?
Often 5% to 20% of receipts, depending on your profit: under the new regime income up to ₹12 lakh is effectively tax free after the section 87A rebate, and rates then rise from 15% to 30%, plus 4% cess. Enter your receipts and expenses here for a number built from the actual slabs.
What is section 44ADA presumptive taxation?
A scheme for specified professionals such as consultants, engineers, architects, doctors and lawyers with receipts up to ₹50 lakh (₹75 lakh if at least 95% is received digitally). You declare 50% of receipts as profit without keeping expense records. This tool shows the tax both ways.
When is advance tax due for freelancers?
If your tax for the year is ₹10,000 or more: 15% by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March. Presumptive taxpayers under 44ADA can pay everything by 15 March.
When must a freelancer register for GST?
When aggregate turnover from services exceeds ₹20 lakh in a year (₹10 lakh in most special category states). GST you collect belongs to the government, so keep it out of your set-aside.
