Common questions

How much of my freelance income should I set aside for tax in South Africa?

Often 15% to 30% of profit, depending on how much you earn: SARS taxes personal income on a sliding scale from 18% to 45%. Enter your income and expenses here for a number built from the actual brackets, rebates and medical credits.

What is provisional tax?

The way freelancers and other people with untaxed income pay SARS during the year: two compulsory payments, about half the estimated tax by the end of August and the balance by the last day of February, plus an optional top-up after year end.

Do I pay UIF as a freelancer?

No. UIF and SDL are employer and employee levies. A self-employed person pays income tax on profit and, when registered, VAT.

When must I register for VAT?

Compulsorily when taxable turnover exceeds R1 million in any 12 months; voluntarily once it exceeds R50,000. VAT you collect belongs to SARS, so keep it out of your set-aside.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?
