What it does, and what it leaves to you
Covers: resident income tax brackets, the ACC earners' levy up to the maximum liable earnings, an optional student loan repayment at 12% above the threshold, and flags for provisional tax and GST registration.
Not decided: ACC CoverPlus work levies, other income, tax credits, losses carried forward, deductions such as home-office and vehicle claims, GST amounts, non-residents, and exactly when provisional tax applies to you. IRD or your accountant decide these.
Common questions
How much of my sole trader income should I set aside for tax in Australia?
Often 20% to 30% of profit once you add income tax and the ACC earners' levy, but it depends on your profit. Enter your income and expenses here for a number built from the actual rates.
Do I pay ACC as self-employed?
Yes. Self-employed people pay the ACC earners' levy on profit, collected through your tax return, plus a CoverPlus work levy billed by ACC. KiwiSaver contributions for yourself are voluntary.
Do I pay tax in instalments?
If your residual income tax is above $5,000 you become a provisional taxpayer. With a 31 March balance date the standard-option instalments are due 28 August, 15 January and 7 May.
When must I register for GST?
When your turnover reaches $60,000 in the last 12 months or is expected to in the next 12. GST you collect belongs to IRD, so keep it out of your set-aside.
