Common questions

How much is dividend tax in the UK?

For 2025/26 dividends above the £500 allowance are taxed at 8.75% in the basic-rate band, 33.75% in the higher-rate band and 39.35% above £125,140. Dividends are taxed on top of your other income.

What changes in 2026/27?

The ordinary and upper dividend rates were announced to rise by two points, to 10.75% and 35.75%, from April 2026; the additional rate stays at 39.35%. Confirm the enacted rates on GOV.UK.

Does the dividend allowance use up my band?

Yes. The first £500 of dividends is taxed at 0% but still counts towards your basic-rate band, which can push later dividends into the higher rate.

Does my personal allowance cover dividends?

Any personal allowance not used by your salary or other income covers dividends first. It is withdrawn £1 for every £2 of income over £100,000.

When do I report and pay?

Dividends over the allowance normally go on your Self Assessment return due 31 January after the tax year. Large bills can trigger payments on account.
