What it does, and what it leaves to you
- Covers: the three announced thresholds (GBP 50,000, 30,000, 20,000), quarterly update dates for standard and calendar quarters, and the final declaration date.
- Gives: your start date, a deadline table and a checklist.
- Not decided: exemptions HMRC grants individually, trusts, personal representatives, non-resident cases, partnership timing, penalty amounts and soft-landing terms, and anything that changed after this page was written. HMRC or your accountant decides these.
Common questions
Who has to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
Sole traders and landlords whose gross self-employment plus property income is more than GBP 50,000 (tax year 2024-25) from 6 April 2026, more than GBP 30,000 (2025-26) from 6 April 2027, and more than GBP 20,000 (2026-27) from 6 April 2028.
Is the threshold profit or turnover?
Gross income before expenses. Employment income, dividends, interest and partnership profit do not count; for jointly held property only your share counts.
What do I have to do?
Keep digital records, send four quarterly updates through compatible software (due 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May), and submit a final declaration by 31 January after the tax year, which replaces the Self Assessment return.
Can I join early?
Yes. Voluntary sign-up is open to anyone with self-employment or property income.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent.
