What it does, and what it leaves to you
Covers: the 4-day period of incapacity test, qualifying days, the rate as the lower of the flat rate and 80% of average weekly earnings from 6 April 2026, the older waiting-day and lower-earnings-limit rules before that date, and the 28-week limit for one spell.
Gives: weekly and daily rate, waiting days, days paid and the total SSP due, as a text file you can keep with the payroll record.
Not decided: how average weekly earnings are calculated from the 8-week reference period, whether the employee is an employee for SSP, notice and evidence rules, company sick pay schemes, linked spells beyond the waiting-day field, and entitlement after 28 weeks. Your payroll provider or HMRC decides these.
Common questions
How much is Statutory Sick Pay in 2026/27?
