Common questions

How much of my freelance income should I set aside for tax in Germany?

Often 15% to 30% of profit for a single freelancer, rising towards 42% at the margin, but it depends on your profit, your insurance contributions and whether you pay Gewerbesteuer. Enter your turnover and expenses here for a number built from the 2026 tariff.

What is the Grundfreibetrag in 2026?

The tax-free allowance in the income tax tariff (section 32a EStG): €12,348 of taxable income for a single person in 2026. The tax rate then rises from 14% to 42% (and 45% above €277,826).

Do Freiberufler pay Gewerbesteuer?

No. Freiberufler under section 18 EStG (for example many consultants, designers, translators and software developers) pay no Gewerbesteuer. Commercial businesses pay it above a €24,500 allowance, but section 35 EStG credits most of it against income tax.

When does the Solidaritaetszuschlag apply?

Only when your annual income tax is above €20,350 for a single person in 2026, phased in over a transition zone up to 5.5% of the tax.
